These passes gave the farmers from the Koue Bokkeveld access to the Ceres Karoo.  The Ceres Karoo was used by farmers as winter grazing for their sheep.  The bumpy road and steep gradients gave rise to the names of Katbakkies and Skitterykloof, Skitterykloof a rather vulgar term for expressing a traveller’s fear when taking this route.  A large part of this route is gravel road.
